The frequency of restringing pearls really depends on how often you wear the piece in question.
The more a piece is worn, the sooner it will need to be restrung. Generally speaking, you will know when to restring your piece by the condition of it. Dirty or damaged knots, uneven gaps, or a sag in the piece are generally signs that tell a piece needs to be restrung

Pearl knotting refers to including a knot between each pearl on a thread, when the piece is being strung. The reason this is done is twofold:
1. To prevent each pearl from rubbing against one another, causing scuffs and potential damage
2. To prevent all the pearls from coming loose, in the event of the string becoming broken
